Botsford News Release
Farmington Hills, Mich. (September 25, 2009)---September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and according to the Michigan Department of Community Health prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among Michigan men. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 820 Michigan men that will die of the disease this year and 7,010 new cases will be diagnosed.
Although the exact cause of prostate cancer is unknown, several factors have been found to increase the risk:
· Age: The older a man is, the greater the risk.
· Family history: Having a father, brother or son with prostate cancer increases risk.
· Race: Prostate cancer is more common in African Americans.
Lucy Coccimiglio, D.O., a Botsford Hospital urologist, says, “Some men with prostate cancer do not have any symptoms of the disease, emphasizing the importance of regular screenings. Some of the most common symptoms of prostate cancer include urinary problems such as not being able to pass urine, difficulty stopping or starting urination, needing to urinate often or weak urine flow. Difficulty having an erection and/or blood in the urine or semen can also be cause for concern.”
