Botsford News Release
Farmington Hills, Mich. (April 7, 2009)---More than 3,000 people in Michigan need a life-saving organ transplant. No one understands the importance of organ donation more than health care workers, and that’s one reason Botsford Hospital is participating in Donate Life Month during April. Hospital staff members hope that the month-long focus will motivate people in local communities to consider the benefits of organ donation and then join the Michigan Organ Donor Registry.
“Organ and tissue donation can save and improve lives in our community, around Michigan and across the nation. Botsford Hospital wants to help drive that point home this month,” said Constance Fleming, Botsford Hospital director of nursing. “Joining the Donor Registry gives hope to those in need of organ and tissue transplants while leaving a legacy of generosity for the donor and his or her family.”
Last year, in Michigan, 327 people donated organs. While it was a record for the state, it was not enough to meet the growing need in Michigan, let alone across the country.
Since 2007, signing the back of a Michigan driver’s license no longer registers an individual as an organ and tissue donor. Those who wish to do so must now join the Michigan Organ Donor Registry by completing a registration form at a Secretary of State branch office or by visiting www.giftoflifemichigan.org. After joining, a red heart sticker will be sent by the Michigan Secretary of State to be placed on the individual’s Michigan driver’s license or state identification card. The presence of the heart sticker officially designates that person as a registered donor.
Botsford Hospital, an independent 330-bed community teaching hospital in Farmington Hills, Mich., was founded in 1965. Nationally recognized for quality, safety and medical education programs, Botsford has received the 2007 Governor’s Award for Improving Patient Safety and Quality of Care in the Hospital Setting, and, in 2007, a three-year recertification as a Chest Pain Center from the Society of Chest Pain Centers. Botsford’s Web address is www.botsford.org.
