Farmington Hills, Mich., June 24, 2008 - Bridgette Wade, 85, of Farmington Hills, delivered 30 handmade lap blankets to The Botsford Foundation earlier this year. These hand-crocheted items are being distributed to cancer patients on Botsford Hospital’s Oncology Unit.
Mrs. Wade hopes that the love she crafts into each blanket is transferred to the patients who receive these gifts, helping them to cope with their disease and treatment.
Mrs. Wade estimates that she works on each blanket for 25 hours and has invested 750 hours of her time making these 30 blankets. She is no stranger to hard work: Mrs. Wade worked as a housecleaner for four local families, retiring when she reached age 75.
Although Mrs. Wade is no longer in their employ, former clients Max and Marilyn McKinney of Farmington Hills maintain a close relationship with their former housecleaner. She is treated like a member of the family, joining them for holidays and other family celebrations. Mrs. McKinney drives Mrs. Wade to local craft stores to make her yarn purchases. Mrs. Wade chose Botsford Hospital as the recipient of her blankets based on Dr. McKinney’s long association with the Farmington Hills hospital. Although now retired from his Farmington Hills family medicine practice, Dr. McKinney continues to serve the hospital as an active member of its Board of Directors.
Staff members of The Botsford Foundation were touched by Mrs. Wade’s kind act and decided to support her good work by making a donation to keep her stocked with yarn. In future, her blankets will continue to bring love and warmth to the hospital’s cancer patients. Please call the Foundation if you, too, have an idea for something that you’d like to do to support Botsford’s patients, (248) 442-5045.
