Farmington Hills, MI (August 4, 2006)--- Botsford General Hospital’s Pastoral Care Department is offering a training series titled “Empowered to Care” which will focus on providing care and support to people facing unique situations. The seminars are available to anyone who may be interested in developing knowledge, building new skills, exploring new areas of ministry and gaining resources for personal and professional growth. This series is especially helpful for clergy, nurses, social workers, physicians, pastoral care volunteers, church/synagogue workers and family caregivers.
Lectures will be held on Wednesday evenings, September 13, 20, 27 and October 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in the 2 East A Conference Room at Botsford General Hospital in Farmington Hills. “What do I say now?” A Practical Experience in Empathy, Wednesday, September 13, teaches listening and effective communication skills to help build empathy.
“Good Grief” Guiding the Grieving Child, Wednesday, September 20, provides techniques to help children deal with grief issues.
How to talk to the Dying: Comforting the Terminally Ill, Wednesday, September 27, covers how to help a terminally ill person deal with their impending death.
“Diversity in Our World… What do you Mean We’re Not All the Same,” Wednesday, October 4, will help participants discover the difference between diversity and prejudice and learn to be sensitive in our diverse world.
“Holy Health” The Impact of Religion on Health Care Delivery, Wednesday, October 11, teaches how each faith deals with current medical issues, such as code status, end-of-life decisions, cremation and organ donation. Discover how to help the patient utilize his or her faith traditions and observances in the process of healing.
“Emotional Rescue” Ministering to the Mentally Ill, Wednesday October 18, provides information to help participants understand and respond to various facets of mental illness, such as depression, bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia.
“Abuse from Use” Care for Substance Abusers, Wednesday, October 25, teaches about the cycle of substance abuse and the emotional toll it takes on the family and the abuser. Discover treatment options and reactions that allow the caregiver to be helpful without enabling the substance abuse to continue.
