Farmington Hills, Mich., July 18, 2006 – The Board of Directors of the Botsford Continuing Care Corporation has approved a name change for a major component of the Botsford Commons Senior Community. The newly-designated Botsford Rehabilitation and Continuing Care Center, formerly the Botsford Continuing Health Center, provides expanded rehabilitation services along with continued long term care on the campus that provides both independent and assisted living options for older adults.
“Our new name reflects our increasing emphasis on short stay rehabilitation following a hospitalization or injury. Today, skilled care coupled with rehabilitation therapy represents a transition step between a hospital stay and the patient’s return to home – the place he or she really wants to be,” said Margaret Lightner, BCCC Chief Operating Officer. Lightner said that an increased number of beds have been designated for patients who have been hospitalized and need additional care before returning home. These patients do not require intensive hospital treatment, but can benefit from additional restorative care, therapies or educational programs.
Typically, patients who will benefit from subacute care have undergone major surgeries, such as hip or knee replacements, or have had strokes, pneumonia or other illnesses that qualify them for skilled care.
The Botsford Rehabilitation and Continuing Care Center will continue to maintain dementia and chronic care units for patients who need those services. “As our population ages, we need more alternatives for care rather than fewer,“ Lightner said. “People want to stay in their own homes longer and subacute care and rehabilitation may give them that option. However, when another level of care is needed, we want to offer that as well.”
The Botsford Health Care Continuum is an integrated system of care which includes Botsford General Hospital, the Botsford Physician Network, Community Emergency Medical Service, the Botsford Continuing Care Corporation and the Botsford Center for Health Improvement.
