Pregnancy Plan
What you can expect during normal pregnancy visits
First Trimester - to 12 weeks
- Initial prenatal visit with thorough history
- Complete physical and pelvic exam
- Pap smear and cultures
- Prenatal screening labs for anemia, infection, and HIV
- Blood pressure
- Urine test
- Estimate of due date from date of last period
- Visits once a month
- Weight
- Blood pressure
- Urine
- Listen for baby's heartbeat at 12 weeks and each visit thereafter
- *Test for Chorionic Villus sampling (CVS) between 10 and 12 weeks
Second Trimester - 12 to 24 weeks
- Visits every 3-4 weeks
- Weight
- Urine
- Baby's heartbeat
- Blood pressure
- Begin prenatal classes
- Blood test to determine risk for birth defects between 15 and 20 weeks
- Ultrasound between 18 and 20 weeks
- Measure size of belly at about 20 weeks
- *Amniocentesis tests for genetic disorders between 15 and 18 weeks
Third Trimester - 24 to 30 weeks
- Visits every 2-3 weeks
- Blood pressure
- Glucose screen for gestational diabetes and anemia between 24 and 28 weeks
- Test for anemia about 26 weeks
- Immunoglobulin shot for Rh negative women at 28 weeks
Third Trimester - 30 weeks to delivery (usually 40 weeks)
- Blood pressure
- Check position of baby about 36 weeks
- Test for Group B strep infection between 35 and 36 weeks
- Visits every week at 36 weeks
- Cervical checks may begin at 36 weeks
*Tests for those who are 35 years of age or older or where indicated
