Adult Pre-op Surgical Instructions

To help make your surgery experience as easy as possible, it is important that you follow these instructions:

• The business day before your surgery you will be called between 1 and 4 p.m. with your arrival time and given direction where to arrive.

• The night before your surgery, DO NOT eat or drink anything, including water, gum or mints, after midnight. If you smoke, do not smoke after midnight.

• The morning of your surgery, follow the medication instructions given to you by the surgical testing nurse. You may brush your teeth and rinse your mouth but do not swallow toothpaste or mouthwash.

• No aspirin products, ibuprofen products, vitamin E or herbal medication should be taken for ten days prior to surgery. This includes street drugs and marijuana. If your surgery is in less than 10 days, stop aspirin and ibuprofen products today. Aspirin and ibuprofen products must be avoided due to the blood thinning effect. Herbal medication must be avoided because of potential adverse reactions.

• If you did not speak directly with a nurse, please bring all current medications in original bottles.

• Please bathe or shower using anti-bacterial soap. Afterwards, please do not use aftershave, cologne, lotion, powder, perfume or make-up. Remove all jewelry and body piercing before coming to the hospital.

• Wear loose and comfortable clothing. Please do not bring personal items with you the morning of surgery. We cannot be responsible for lost belongings. However, please bring your insurance and prescription cards as these cards may be needed to fill a prescription.

• You will meet with an anesthesiologist in the pre-op area. A parent must accompany minor children. If a legal guardian has been appointed, the guardian must accompany the patient with the proper guardianship papers.

• If you develop a cold, sore throat, fever or any symptoms of illness, notify your surgeon.  Your surgery may need to be rescheduled.

• A responsible/licensed driver must accompany you the day of surgery and remain in the hospital until you are ready for discharge. You must have someone home with you for 24 hours upon discharge.

Your cooperation in following these instructions is essential to a safe and successful surgical experience. Failure to comply with any of the previous information may result in the cancellation of your surgery.

Parking
Botsford offers free valet parking service from 5 a.m. - 6 p.m. at the front entrance of the hospital. To take advantage of this service, bring your valet ticket to any of our patient service areas and have it stamped.
