Balloon Catheter Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation Therapy
Don't want a mastectomy? Then this may be your answer. A balloon brachytherapy catheter is a device used by surgeons and radiation oncologists to treat the site of a lumpectomy and conserve the healthy breast.
This allows patients to receive partial breast irradiation versus a mastectomy or full breast irradiation. The treatments are twice per day for five days as compared to five days a week for seven weeks of radiation. The multi-lumen catheter, placed at the time of the lumpectomy, allows for skin sparing techniques, which results in better cosmetic outcome.
