Program Description

The Dermatology residency at Botsford Hospital is a three-year accredited program and an integration of Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM), Botsford Hospital and Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital. It was the first board-certified osteopathic dermatology residency in the country.  Utilizing National Core Competencies as the educational template, this residency proudly graduates board-eligible dermatologists and boasts a 100% pass rate on the National Board Exam over the past twenty years.

Core trainers include a myriad of medical, surgical and full-time cosmetic dermatologists.

Residents electively rotate in pediatric dermatology, dermatopathology, Mohs surgery and plastic surgery. Didactics include patient grand rounds and Michigan Dermatology Society meetings with fellow osteopathic and allopathic dermatology residencies in the area.  These include residents from University of Michigan, Wayne State University and Henry Ford Medical Center. Botsford residents attend lectures and actively read slides weekly with a team of dermatopathologists.

In addition to their didactic and office schedules, residents cover dermatology consultations at both hospitals and run two independent resident dermatology clinics.  They are responsible throughout the year for lecturing interns, medical students and residents in an array of topics.

Residents are expected to participate in both the annual and mid-year American Osteopathic College of Dermatology meetings and the American Academy of Dermatology annual meeting. The Michigan State University lecture series provides national lecturers throughout the year with leading dermatology physicians presenting diverse topics.

Interns and medical students are encouraged to rotate through the program with core attending physicians and participate in resident clinics.
