More than 5,000. That's the number of women Sheldon Weiner, M.D. estimates that he has treated in his 30 year career as a gynecologic oncologist. Now he's brought that experience to Botsford.
As a gynecologic oncologist, Dr. Weiner specializes in treating women with cervical, ovarian, and reproductive cancers. His background also includes intensive training in surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and research techniques--so he's able to help coordinate the most effective treatment plan for women who are diagnosed with cancer. "My job is to see that the other specialists involved in the patient's care, as well as her gynecologist, are aware of any changes in her condition or treatments," he explains. "That way, details don't slip through the cracks."
Dr. Weiner's arrival also means that women who live in the area can get that expert care close to home. "They can have surgery at Botsford and chemotherapy or radiation treatments at our cancer center next door," he says. "That means a woman's life is less disrupted at a time when she's vulnerable."
A satisfied patient
One of those patients is Bernice McGee. She turned to Dr. Weiner when the endometrial cancer she had been treated for previously came back. "He's wonderful--caring and truly skilled," she says. "He's helping me beat this disease."
Dr. Weiner helped her choose between two treatment options: chemotherapy and radiation therapy. "He helped me understand what could happen and how I'd feel, she says. "With his guidance, I made a decision that was right for me. And, I've never looked back."
