A most Unforgettable Character
In a lifetime, we all hopefully have the good fortune of getting to know one maybe two people that leaves us with a lasting impression that they are the most unforgettable character that we will ever meet.
Louis J. Spagnuolo, D. O., proved to be that person in my life. I first met Dr. Spagnuolo, affectionately called “Spag,” in January 1962 when I started my orthopedic surgery practice at Zieger Osteopathic Hospital. Typical of Dr. Spag he greeted me with a warm smile, a glad handshake and made me feel at home immediately. That “bubbly” welcome never changed over the next 47 years.
Spag is synonymous with congeniality, cordiality, conscientious, capable, caring, kind, lovable, warm hearted and good natured, you could go on with every positive descriptive term in the dictionary and they would all apply to this giant charismatic professional.
His many great attributes are highlighted as a devoted, caring husband of
Lucille of 65 years and an extremely proud father of 4, grandfather of 10, and great grandfather of 11.
Dr. Lou was an outstanding innovative, respected surgeon, teacher, and mentor. Spag was a true “Surgeon’s Surgeon”. Everyone he came in contact with just loved him. He taught his countless surgical residents the true meaning of professionalism. He became an inspiration for all to emulate and admire.
His loyalty to Botsford Hospital was unquestioned and unmatched. He devoted his entire professional life to improving the quality of care and image of Botsford Hospital.
His passion for golf and having a good time was legendary. I had the pleasure of playing countless rounds of golf with Spag, he always amazed me with his competiveness while continuing to have so much fun playing golf.
Dr. Spagnuolo loved his profession, he loved people, he was a devout Catholic, he had a productive and inspiring career and led an exemplary life. Spag enjoyed and embraced life to its fullest. He had the most wonderful optimistic, enthusiastic outlook on all aspects of life; his cup was always full to the very end.
Louis J. Spagnuolo, D.O., FACOS, One of a Kind. A Gem. An Icon.
We will miss him. We will never forget him. “For a little guy he packed a wallop of charisma.”
Thanks Spag! “Go Irish.”
