Three boys, all named Jerry, began a friendship in a northwestern Detroit neighborhood that would last a lifetime. These friends attended the same grade school, junior high school, high school and all went to college at University of Detroit. They then chose the same path to become physicians at Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Jerome Kwartowitz, D.O., anesthesiologist, Jerry Taylor, D.O., orthopedic surgeon, and Gerald Uzansky, D.O., family medicine specialist, all made Botsford Hospital their professional home by joining the medical staff in the 1960s. Though busy with families and professional obligations, they always found time to golf, play squash and racquetball and take ski trips together. And, they had a lot of laughs along the way.
Then, in 2005, Dr. Kwartowitz passed away, leaving his family, friends and colleagues to mourn. The two remaining Jerrys, Dr. Taylor and Dr. Uzansky, wanted to do more than simply grieve this loss. To honor their dear friend’s memory and create a lasting tribute to his 40-year career as an anesthesiologist at Botsford Hospital, this friendship and professional association resulted in remodeling and upgrading the newly-named Jerome J. Kwartowitz, D.O., Center for Ambulatory Surgery. These two doctors, working with the The Botsford Foundation staff, provided leadership to raise funds to make this improvement and create this memorial tribute.
This special tribute is a true testament to the power of long-lasting friendship and the power of philanthropy.
