Botsford Hospital doesn’t just “think green”: With its cancer center, Botsford is acting green. The cancer center blazes trails with its ecofriendly building design. It also sets new standards for environmentally friendly operation. Since its opening in January 2009, the center uses 30 percent less water and 17.5 percent less energy than typical new buildings. The construction practices also have preserved area resources and reduced waste by 96 percent. This waste would have otherwise gone to Michigan landfills. “With this project, we reduced our environmental impact,” says Paul LaCasse, D.O., president and CEO of Botsford Hospital. “Acting for our environment is everyone’s duty.”
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), provides a suite of standards for environmentally sustainable construction. Going Green
Environmentally friendly features of the Botsford Cancer Center include:
In the process of designing the cancer center, Erdman, Botsford’s design and building firm, worked with the state of Michigan to create a waste drywall recycling program. Hundreds of thousands of tons of drywall material that normally would go to Michigan landfills each year can now be recycled into fertilizer. Builders across Michigan can now recycle drywall under the same program.
Setting the Standard
The cancer center is the first cancer center in Michigan certified under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System. The system was developed by a nationally recognized nonprofit trade organization, the Green Building Council. The group recognizes construction projects that meet the highest environmental and health standards.
“All of these efforts were optional, but we are committed to this community,” says Dr. LaCasse. “We spent the extra effort and extra money to be a responsible community citizen.”
