Wellness Minute: Summer Fitness and the Prevention of Heat-Related Illnesses
What are some heat related illnesses?
- Heat Cramps
- Caused if you drink too little or too much water
- Heat Exhaustion
- Feel light headed, nauseated, tired, anxious or confused
- Heat Stroke
- You will have a high temperature, you will be confused, call emergency 9-1-1
How can I prevent this?
- Stay hydrated: drink 1 1/2 to 2 cups of water before beginning a workout
- Stretch your muscles before beginning your workout
- Wear light weight clothing
- Exercise in the early morning or evening when it is cooler
- Check the heat index
- Stop and rest when feeling tired
- Avoid alcohol use
Always ask your physician before starting an exercise program!
What is the best way to stay hydrated?
- Make sure you drink plenty of water - we lose 2 liters of water each day doing regular activities!
- Don't use your thirst as a guide for what your body needs - consistently drink!
- Best liquid is water. Avoid drinks with sugar or alcohol - sports drinks can be helpful, but they do have calories so are not necessary unless you are exercising for an extended period of time (over an hour).
