American Red Cross Swim Lessons

All swim classes follow the American Red Cross curriculum.  Classes are 6-week sessions and meet one day a week.  Small class sizes.  Pre-registration necessary!  You may sign up for swim lessons at the front desk, by phone, or online.  Register Today!

 

Parent Toddler (Age: 6 months to 3 years old)
This class encourages independent movement in the water and helps children transition to a class without the parent present.  Instructors will work with each child and parent pair at the child’s level to teach basic water safety, swimming readiness activities and basic swimming skills through songs and other fun aquatic games.  One child per parent/adult please.  Both parents are welcome to attend.  Class meets in Therapy pool.

Preschoolers (Age: 3-5 years old)
This class is intended to be a transition from parent to independent swimming.  Students will gain confidence in the water through a series of water games and floating exercises.  It is recommended that more tentative swimmers enroll in this class before attempting Young Swimmer I.  Class meets in Therapy pool.

Young Swimmer I (Age: 5-7 years old)
This class is designed for children with little or no experience in the water.  There are no prerequisites.  Water safety, submerging head, breath holding, front and back floats, beginning kicking and arm stroke, and beginning freestyle and backstroke are the skills focused on in this class.  Class meets in Therapy pool.

Young Swimmer 2 (Age: 7-9 years old)
Prerequisites for this class include: Fully submerged head for 2-3 seconds, float for 3-5 seconds, and swim 5-10 feet with face in the water.  New skills introduced include: Rolling over from front to back and back to front, glides, recovering for air while swimming, swimming in deeper water, swimming increased distances, and improved freestyle & backstroke.

Level 1 Swimmers (Age: 9-11 years old)
This program is geared toward individuals with little or no swimming experience.  The skills introduced in these classes will depend on the expressed needs of the participants.  There are no prerequisites.  Floating, kicking, propulsion techniques, proper breathing, and beginning freestyle & backstroke will be covered in this program.  Class meets in the Therapy pool.

Level 2 Swimmers (Age: 9-11 years old)
Prerequisites: Must be able to enter and exit water unassisted, blow bubbles underwater.  Float on back and front with face in water open eyes under water.  Class meets in the Lap pool.

 

Private Swim Lessons

Private swim lessons are perfect for the adult or child, from the novice swimmer to the athlete who prefer one on one instruction.

Family Swim Night
Members bring your family!  This is a great opportunity to bring the whole family to
spend some time in the pool.  Water toys, diving rings and some small floats are welcome during this time.  A lifeguard will be on duty.  Family swim night is scheduled the first Friday of the month in the BCHI pools from 6:00-8:30pm.  Also open to swim class participants.  Please see the Member Services desk for details.
