Botsford Hospital Laboratory staff selected Thomas F. Bosman, a nationally-certified pathologist assistant, to receive the Joseph H. Langnas, D.O. Memorial Laboratory Enrichment Award. Botsford's Department of Laboratory Services hosted the award ceremony this month, which was attended by Bosman's coworkers, the hospital's pathology staff, members of the Langnas family and others.
Dr. Langnas' family established the award to support the attendance of a Botsford Hospital lab employee at a professional society educational meeting.
This award honors Bosman for outstanding performance of his duties for more than 20 years since the day he was hired by Joseph Langnas, D.O., who was Botsford Hospital's medical director of Laboratory Services and chairman of its Pathology Department. Dr. Langnas passed away in 2005.
At Botsford, Bosman has instructed countless physician-residents going through clinical training, pathology-assistant students from Wayne State University and others on dissecting and processing surgical specimens and performing autopsies. He has prepared frozen sections, allowing pathologists to render immediate specimen interpretation for surgical patients.
"Tom has always helped out other clinical divisions when asked for assistance," says Gil Herman, M.D., Ph.D., Botsford's current director of laboratory medicine and chairman of pathology. "He is a pillar of the laboratory. Tom was recognized by the entire laboratory staff as deserving of this award."
Dr. Herman continues, "Other institutions have attempted to recruit Tom, however he has remained loyal to Botsford. He has managed to work well even under intensely high-pressure times, yet never misses a workday or utters a word of complaint. Tom produces the highest quality work and is a true Botsford Hospital patriot."
