Botsford News Release
Farmington Hills, Mich. (September 28, 2012)---A group of doctors and others from Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University traveled from St. Louis, Missouri to Farmington Hills this week to observe the advanced cancer treatment technology at Botsford Cancer Center.
Botsford is one of the few cancer centers in Michigan that offers high-dose radiation (HDR) brachytherapy, an innovative technology for the treatment of several types of cancer – including prostate and breast. HDR brachytherapy requires fewer treatments while delivering greater accuracy and fewer side effects. The groups are considering adding the technology to their own hospitals and came to Botsford to see first-hand how it works and to learn from physicians who are experienced in using it.
"This is an exciting time for our community," reflects Nicholle Mehr, director of Botsford Cancer Center. "Residents have access to technology that people are traveling cross-country for."
Dr. Hiram Gay, assistant professor at Washington University School of Medicine and one of this week's visitors, says his group chose to observe the technology at Botsford Cancer Center at the recommendation of other physicians at his organization who trained at the Center.
