Botsford News Release
Farmington Hills, Mich. (May 29, 2012)---The Botsford Cancer Center hosts free lymphedema screening events on the fourth Tuesday every month. The next event: Tuesday, June 26 from 3 to 4 p.m. for any breast cancer patient.
Botsford physical and occupational therapists certified in lymphedema treatment will check participants for signs of arm swelling and how this interferes with a person’s function; they will assess the swollen arm’s movement and strength; as well as conduct a detailed interview. All breast cancer patients are welcome and encouraged to attend, even those treated for breast cancer at other hospitals.
"Lymphedema in the arm often occurs after breast cancer treatment," explains Merlin Francis, manager of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Botsford Hospital. "This swelling can cause pain and loss of movement and strength, limiting a breast cancer patient’s daily activities."
The goal of the event is to raise awareness of lymphedema and explain treatment options, including skin care, diet modifications, massage, exercise and wearing a compression garment.
Those interested should register early as spaces are expected to fill up fast and registration is required.
Date & Time: Fourth Tuesday of each month, next will be June 26 from 3 to 4 p.m.
Location: Botsford Cancer Center, 27900 Grand River, Farmington Hills, MI 48336
