Botsford News Release
Farmington Hills, Mich. (October 4, 2011)---Dozens of women from the communities served by Botsford Hospital received vital cancer screenings and important health information at the Women's Health Event held Saturday at the Botsford Cancer Center. The event represented the kick-off to Botsford's observance of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Teams of Botsford physicians completed at least 42 breast cancer screenings and 14 cervical cancer screenings that morning. Savitha Balaraman, M.D., a Botsford Cancer Center oncologist, was featured speaker for the event. She discussed Detection, Treatment and Prevention of Cancer of Women's Reproductive Systems and answered cancer-related questions from women in the audience. Other Botsford services and community organizations provided information tables and explained their services to attendees.
In thanking staff members who volunteered for the event, Paul LaCasse, D.O., President and CEO of Botsford Hospital called the program "A clear example of our commitment to mission and the surrounding community."
"Early detection remains our greatest challenge in the successful treatment of women's cancers," said Nicholle Mehr, director of the Botsford Cancer Center. "For patients who were found to have abnormalities, we were able to recommend immediate follow up by an appropriate specialist," said Mehr.
