Botsford News Release
Farmington Hills, Mich. (May 31, 2011)---Vance D. Powell, Jr., D.O., a physician on Botsford Hospital's medical staff, is this year's recipient of the Michael Opipari, D.O. Distinguished Service Award from the Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) Statewide Campus System (SCS). The SCS is the postdoctoral training institution affiliated with MSUCOM. Dr. Powell accepted the award at the annual SCS membership meeting earlier this month.
Among award criteria is outstanding service to the SCS. Dr. Powell chaired SCS for six years, led the Implementation Ad Hoc Committee helping to form SCS, served as internship inspector for the American Osteopathic Association for more than 20 years, and presided over the Association of Osteopathic Directors of Medical Education. He continues to serve Botsford Hospital as its director of medical education, a position he has held for more than 30 years. This practicing obstetrician-gynecologist additionally leads the hospital’s Obstetrics/Gynecology and Gynecologic Surgery Residency Program.
“Vance has been instrumental in developing Botsford into a nationally recognized teaching hospital for osteopathic physicians,” said David P. Walters, D.O., Botsford’s vice-president and chief medical officer. “We join the SCS in honoring his long commitment to the furtherance of post-doc medical education not only here at Botsford, but also at the state and national levels. His tireless efforts have lead to better-trained physicians and better care for patients.”
The SCS comprises 31 member hospitals in Michigan and two colleges of osteopathic medicine, MSUCOM and Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine located in Missouri.
