Farmington Hills, Mich., July 11, 2008 -- Twenty years ago, Botsford Hospital, a community teaching hospital in Farmington Hills, opened its Rehab Unit. The unit provides inpatient rehabilitative services to patients with physical, functional thinking, swallowing or communication impairments. This year, the Rehab Unit held an open house for employees and retirees to rekindle their friendships and relive good times, both current and past, including caring for thousands of patients.
With an average length of stay of seven to 10 days, patients and staff members enjoy getting to know each other. Cynthia Williams, RN, unit manager, explains, “My staff is truly engaged in and committed to specialized inpatient rehab care. And, we thoroughly enjoy our patients.”
In addition to nursing care, patients access physical, occupational and speech therapies right on the unit. Another unique feature of this unit---patients take meals together in a large, cheerful dining room containing a kitchen, big-screen TV and piano.
Earlier this year, Botsford Hospital’s Service Excellence Committee, advocates of the organization’s customer service standards, presented the Rehab Unit with an award for achieving a high standard of patient service. These health caregivers’ finely-honed abilities in making positive first impressions, extending respect and courtesy, working as a cohesive team, behaving professionally and keeping safety top of mind earned them high marks on patient satisfaction survey scores in 2007. Not surprisingly, in the same year’s survey of employee engagement, 82 percent of the unit’s employees scored as moderately to highly engaged in their work.
Deeply caring for patients is reflected in the unit’s camaraderie among its staff members. Williams admits that her unit loves to celebrate. The observances of special weeks, days and months for each of the unit’s professions, such as Occupational Therapy Month in April, is hosted by the employees in the other professions. Of course, there’s a big holiday party in December. Finally, each staff member’s employment anniversary and birthday are celebrated every year.
Botsford Hospital, a 330-bed community hospital in Farmington Hills, Mich., was founded in 1965. Nationally recognized for quality, safety and medical education programs, Botsford received the 2006 Governor’s Award for Improving Patient Safety and Quality of Care in the Hospital Setting and, in 2007, a three-year recertification as a Chest Pain Center from the Society of Chest Pain Centers.
