Advancements in Spinal Surgery at Botsford Hospital

Farmington Hills, MI (March 12, 2008)--- Significant advancements have been made in the field of spinal surgery.  Today, patients of all ages are benefiting from new technology that allows surgeons to perform complex operations on the spine.

Since July, spine surgeon, Peter Bono, D.O., has performed over 100 minimally invasive spine surgeries at Botsford Hospital.  Minimally invasive surgical techniques are performed through a one-inch incision and reduce post-operative back pain, length of stay at the hospital and blood loss, eliminating the need for blood transfusions.  Prior to minimally invasive surgical procedures, Dr. Bono was performing spinal surgeries that included larger incisions, muscle stripping, longer operative time and anesthesia, extended hospital stays and longer recovery periods.  Typically minimally invasive surgery is performed outpatient or with overnight hospitalization.

The goal of minimally invasive surgery is the same as before but with the use of computer-assisted image guidance allowing the surgeon to “see” the spine through the skin, a large incision is not necessary.  Dr. Bono says, “Two years ago, the technology wasn’t available to offer this surgery, and now it’s all I offer.  Minimally invasive spine surgery has developed out of the desire to effectively treat disorders of the spinal discs with minimal muscle-related injury and with rapid recovery.”
