Botsford Blood Bank Tech Wins 1st Endowed Fund Award

Farmington Hills, Mich., October 1, 2007 - At a ceremony earlier this week, Susan Pelley, a Livonia resident and medical technologist in the Laboratory Services Division of Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills, became the first person to receive an annual award from the Joseph H. Langnas, D.O., Memorial Laboratory Enrichment Fund. Dr. Langnas' friends, family and colleagues created this endowed fund to celebrate the life and career of this longtime Botsford pathologist who passed away in 2005.

Citing Pelley's accomplishments that earned her the award, Gil Herman, Ph.D., M.D., Botsford's medical director of laboratory medicine, says, "Sue has been instrumental in helping the hospital to automate the lab's blood bank area, which allows speedier blood-testing results, improves patient safety, and, combined with the computerization, increases communication among health caregivers. She has completely embraced the switch to new technology in the lab and supports her colleagues whenever they need technological assistance---even on her days off."

In fact it was the majority of Pelley's colleagues in the lab, who with their votes, decided that she should be given this award. It comes not only with much-deserved recognition, but also funding that will pay for her to attend the 2008 annual conference of the American Association of Blood Banks in Montreal, Canada.

This 20-year Botsford employee comments, "I am very honored to be selected by my coworkers. I have a great support system in the lab. My boss, Stella Fratarcangeli, manager of transfusion services, is so sincere when she tells me how much she appreciates me. And, what makes this extra special is that I worked under Dr. Langnas. He always treated us like professionals, carefully listening to us and backing us up when needed. It's gratifying to be selected for an award named for this great man."

Botsford Hospital, an independent 330-bed community hospital in Farmington Hills, Mich., was founded in 1965. Nationally recognized for quality, safety and medical education programs, Botsford has received the 2006 Governor's Award for Improving Patient Safety and Quality of Care in the Hospital Setting, and, in 2007, a three-year recertification as a Chest Pain Center from the Society of Chest Pain Centers.
