Botsford Hospital Earns American Cancer Society Award

Farmington Hills, Mich., April 11, 2007 – For the second year running, the American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division, named Botsford Hospital as a Five-Star Community Investor for Botsford’s role in the fight against cancer in southeastern Michigan.

“As Botsford enters a new era in cancer treatment, we are especially proud of this recognition of our hospital’s dedication to cancer prevention, screening and treatment programs for our community members,” commented Paul LaCasse, D.O., Botsford’s president and CEO.

The Farmington Hills hospital has plans to add a 30,000-square-foot cancer center on Grand River Avenue frontage that it owns. This $15.5 million project will house radiation oncology facilities, office space for Botsford’s medical oncologists and rooms for complementary therapies. Groundbreaking is planned for later this year. In a related construction project, the hospital also plans to restore the historic portion of the Botsford Inn, which would include a rose garden situated between the famous inn and the cancer center. Patients receiving treatment would be able to look out over this garden.

To qualify for the award, Botsford partnered with the American Cancer Society in five of the society’s outreach, education and support initiatives. “These initiatives reflect Botsford’s community mission,” said Rhonda Falzon, manager of Botsford’s cancer nursing unit. “These include tobacco prevention and cessation programs, referring our patients to the American Cancer Society for transportation services to and from chemotherapy or radiation treatments, community screenings, helping patients connect with American Cancer Society breast cancer peer support groups and maintaining a Web site link that allows our patients direct assess to the information and educational materials on the American Cancer Society’s Web site.”
