Farmington Hills, MI (January 3, 2007)--- Mitzi Amelon, D.O., a Botsford Hospital family doctor, is taking an important step to promote healthy lifestyles for youth. With the percentage of overweight children in the U.S. growing rapidly, it is more important than ever to emphasize healthy habits in family life as well as schools.
Last year, Dr. Amelon took action to help encourage healthy living in local schools in Metro Detroit by applying for and receiving the Healthy School Environment Grant, a mini grant through Michigan Team Nutrition. With the grant, she has been able to create two Coordinated School Health Teams (CSHTs), facilitate the healthy school action tool, create action plans and implement changes for healthier environments at Keith Elementary and Clifford H. Smart Middle School in Walled Lake.
Dr. Amelon says, “Thanks to Denise Holmes, a nutrition educator at the Botsford Wellness Complex in Novi, I learned about the Michigan Action for Healthy Kids. This led me to obtaining the grant.”
Dr. Amelon’s creation of CHSTs has also helped open doors for other grant opportunities. Dr. Amelon adds, “As a parent who wants her children growing up in a culture which supports healthy lifestyles and as a physician who has seen the devastating consequences of the current culture, I am determined to continue working to fight for this crucial change.”
