Botsford News Release

New Imaging Technology at Botsford

Farmington Hills, MI (November 9, 2006) -- Botsford General Hospital launched a new MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) service on the hospital campus earlier this week. A mobile MRI unit will be operating at the hospital Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Botsford will continue to provide MRI service at the Botsford Wellness Center in Novi on weekends.

“The on-campus MRI represents a convenience for patients coming from the east side of Botsford’s service area. It also gives us immediate access to this important technology for Emergency Department patients as well as our inpatients,” said William F. Scheuber, Botsford Administrator for Professional and Support Services.

A MRI scan is a radiology technique that uses a magnetic field and radio waves to produce images of body structures via a computer. “The images produced by MRI are quite detailed and can detect tiny changes of structures within the body,” said Stephan Morse, D.O., Chairman of Botsford’s Department of Radiology.

The technology represents an extremely accurate method of disease detection throughout the body. Dr. Morse explained that an MRI scan can be used for patients with a variety of medical conditions. In the head, abnormalities associated with stroke or tumors can be very sensitively diagnosed. Neurosurgeons use MRI in evaluating patients with spinal injury or back pain. An MRI scan can assess the structure of the heart and aorta, where it may detect aneurysms or tears. The images produced also provide valuable information on organs within the abdomen, and accurate information about the structure of the joints, soft tissues, and bones of the body.
