Farmington Hills, MI (August 29, 2006)--- Botsford General Hospital will hold a Blood Drive for the American Red Cross on Friday, September 8.
Blood donations will be accepted between 7:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the hospital’s Zieger Administration and Education Building. Donors are urged to call Kim Renzi, Botsford’s Employee Services representative at (248) 888-2610 to schedule an appointment.
For more than 20 years, Botsford has been a site for American Red Cross sponsored blood drives. Statistics tell us that every two seconds someone in America will need a blood transfusion and 95 percent of men and women who reach the age of 75 will have a blood transfusion. However, only five percent of the people who can donate blood do so. While we think of accident victims as the users of blood products, the actual need is far greater. Blood transfusions are also used for heart surgery, organ transplants, women with complications during childbirth, newborns and premature babies and patients receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or other diseases, such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia.
In order to donate blood, you must be 17 years old, in good health and weigh at least 100 pounds. While there is no upper age limit for donors, some medical conditions, medical histories, prescription drugs and recent travel to some foreign countries limit donor eligibility. For more information on these restrictions, call the Great Lakes Blood Services Region at 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or go to the American Red Cross web site at www.givelife.org.
