Botsford Adds Nephrology Fellowship Program

Farmington Hills, MI (August 9, 2006)--- Botsford General Hospital’s Medical Education Department has added a new fellowship-training program in nephrology and named Michael Keefe, D.O., as Program Director.

Botsford has always treated patients with kidney conditions and renal disease and in 1991, partnered with the Botsford Kidney Center to offer state of the art, comprehensive medical care. Last April, the American Osteopathic Association approved the Botsford fellowship program, which is also part of the Statewide Campus System through Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The nephrology program is part of Botsford’s response to young physicians’ growing interest in specialty training opportunities. The new program is expected to aid in the continued recruitment of outstanding physicians to the Botsford internal medicine residency program. Vance Powell, D.O., Director of Medical Education, says, “The fellowship program is an excellent way to keep so many of the outstanding doctors that attend our residency programs. The new nephrology fellows will be able to provide additional coverage to the attendings. This will offer a more immediate and higher level of service to patient care.”

In July, Michael Misuraca, D.O., became the first nephrology fellow at Botsford. Matt Pyenta, D.O., will also be involved with the Botsford program; however he will spend most of his time at Riverview Hospital.

Botsford General Hospital, an independent, acute care, 330-bed community hospital in Farmington Hills, Mich., was founded in 1965. Nationally recognized for quality, safety and medical education programs, Botsford has received the 2005 Solucient 100 Top Hospitals: Performance Improvement Leaders award and the 2004 Governor’s Award of Excellence for Improving Care in the Hospital Setting (for treatment of heart attack) and Improving Care in the Emergency Department Setting (also for heart attack treatment).
