Farmington Hills, MI (July 10, 2006)--- Botsford General Hospital has long been recognized as the premier teaching hospital within the osteopathic profession. More than 200 dedicated teaching faculty members educate medical students and physicians during their pre and post-graduate clinical training at Botsford. To date, Botsford has trained nearly 2,500 interns, residents and fellows as well as innumerable medical students from any of the 20+ colleges of osteopathic medicine. The hospital’s mission demonstrates the critical importance of educating and training physicians.
“Botsford has been providing osteopathic training programs for more than 50 years and has been working with Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) since the early 70’s,” says Sonja Amos, Medical Administration Director. Amos continues, “Botsford has a distinguished history in preparing physicians to meet the growing and complex demand for health care services.” Botsford was one of the founding members of the Consortium for Osteopathic Graduate Medical Education and Training (COGMET), which has now transitioned into the Statewide Campus System. The consortium approach of COGMET facilitated the development of higher quality osteopathic primary care training programs in Michigan.
Combining the strengths of MSUCOM and Botsford with a formal affiliation agreement has maximized the available resources for a quality comprehensive graduate medical education. Vance Powell, Medical Education Director, says, “Botsford is a highly sought after place to train. There are more medical students who want to train here than available slots. As such, the selection process has to go to a lottery system.”
This year, Botsford will welcome 162 new interns, residents and fellows representing 20 different osteopathic colleges in the U.S. At Botsford’s 56th annual graduation in June, Botsford had 69 graduates who will be working around the country or continuing to practice at Botsford.
The Botsford Health Care Continuum is an integrated system of care which includes Botsford General Hospital, the Botsford Physician Network, Community Emergency Medical Service, the Botsford Continuing Care Corporation and the Botsford Center for Health Improvement.
