Farmington Hills, MI (July 5, 2006)--- Botsford General Hospital recently celebrated the graduation of its 56th class of interns and residents. To date, Botsford has trained nearly 2,500 interns, residents and fellows. The hospital’s mission demonstrates the critical importance of educating and training new generations of physicians.
This year, Botsford created the Robert F. Schirmer Educator of the Year Award to recognize one physician who stands out as an exceptional teacher. This award, voted on by interns, residents, medical students and attending physicians, was created as a tribute and memorial to Dr. Schirmer who trained many residents and interns over the years. Vance Powell, D.O., Botsford’s Director of Medical Education, says, “It is easy to train the ones that are very bright, self-motivated and only need to be guided in the right direction. The true educator, however, will take notice of the one who may be a little less motivated, and rather than ignore him/her because it takes more work, will find a way to engage or energize that individual and bring him/her up to the level of a ‘superstar’.”
This year’s recipient, David Lang, D.O., Internal Medicine physician at Botsford General Hospital, was selected for his commitment to excellence and consistent personal sacrifice of time and energy in mentoring interns, residents and medical students. Not only has he been an educator at Botsford, he also completed his medical internship and residency there. Dr. Lang says, “I am grateful that an award has been established in honor of my former mentor, partner and friend, Dr. Schirmer. I am quite pleased to receive this award and will continue to teach at the standards set forth by the award’s namesake.”
