Botsford Doctors Participate in Honduras Surgical Mission

Farmington Hills, MI (June 7, 2006)--- Botsford General Hospital podiatric surgeon, Jeffrey Yung, D.P.M., along with Larry Ward, D.P.M., and Jarrod Shapiro, D.P.M., Botsford podiatry residents, participated in the Baja Project for Crippled Children/ Children of Honduras Project earlier this year. Podiatric foot and ankle surgeons from various parts of the country joined together in this humanitarian effort in Honduras to surgically correct pediatric congenital deformities.

During the trip, the physicians performed complex reconstructive surgery for children with congenital foot and ankle deformities as well as neuromuscular deformities; deformities such as clubfoot, spastic and paralytic disorders. In five days, 47 surgical procedures were performed. The ages of the patients ranged from 4 months to 50 years old, with the majority of patients being children and infants.

Through the Baja Project, a strong relationship has been formed between the Podiatric surgeons from the U.S. and Honduran Orthopedic surgeons from the Honduran Nation Medical School. During the trip, members of the U.S. team lecture to the Honduran Medical School on current concepts and treatments for clubfeet, including the Ponsetti casting technique. In return, post-operative care is provided by the Honduran orthopedic surgeons.

In conjunction with the Baja Project, Dr. Yung has been participating in surgical missions for the past seven years. Dr. Yung says, “Since 1967, the Baja Project has treated over 27,000 children and performed over 1,800 surgeries. All equipment and supplies are brought to Honduras by the U.S. team. Because of the surgeons who offer their time and skills as well as the donations we receive from the community, the Baja Project has managed to continue to provide surgical care to children.”

Planning is underway for another mission in January of 2007. Donations to support that trip can be sent to Baja Project for Crippled Children, Attn: Stan Weinstein, D.P.M., 3470 Ridgeford Dr., Westlake Dr., Westlake Village, CA 91361.
